My first experience with painting on the new smooth red surface that I've prepared. These two paintings are going to be part of my new series that involves the house I grew up in Myanmar. It's like painting on Martian soil.
I use a loose form of the Bargue method to block in my drawing. I learned this on my first day at the New York Academy of Art and it's still a useful technique if you have a reference that is to size.

The next step was to just try to get the tone correct by putting in the darkest dark and the lightest lights. I"m really not thinking about color here yet and I want to keep it fresh by leaving as much of the ground left untouched or at least showing through.
